Fiction. Literature. HTML:

A woman with three loves and a son with three fathers: a universal story of passion and personal destiny by the award-winning author of A Pigeon and a Boy.

When the mysterious Judith arrives in a small agricultural village in Palestine in the 1930s, she attracts attention of three men: Moshe, a widowed farmer; Globerman, a wealthy cattle dealer; and Jacob, who loses his wife??the most beautiful woman in the village??because of his obsession with Judith, who insists on living in a cowshed rather than settling down with any of her admirers. When she gives birth to Zayde, all three suitors consider him their son, and Zayde, who tragically loses Judith, imbibes their triple wisdom and their distinct versions of his origins. As Zayde pieces together the beguiling story of the singular woman who was his mother, Meir Shalev weaves a magical novel of the joys and secrets of village life, of an unconventional family, and the unexpected fruits of love… (more)

Por amor a Judit
Meir Shalev

I loved the writing and found the book very interesting. However, I found the ending a real disappointment, so will rate it only a 3. I also feel the book was very metaphorical, but i have not yet figured out most of the metaphors. ( )

This is the story of Zayde, his beautiful and mystic mother Judith, and her three lovers: cunning Globerman, the cattle dealer; Jacob, owner of hundreds of birds and host to the four meals; and Moshe, raised as a girl by his mother and on a traumatic life-long quest for his lost golden braid.

A beautifully-written novel, with many memorable characters, the story begins in 1930's Palestine, is structured around four meals which span several decades, and in which unfolds the story of a child named Zayde, his mother who has secrets of a sad past, and his three fathers who compete for the love of his mother. A most delicious book that needs to be read very slowly to savor the wonderful story and its nuances ( )
