Mickey works for a sorcerer who draws power from the hat he wears. One day, while the sorcerer is away, Mickey puts on the hat and tries his hand at magic to get his chores done. But Mickey doesn’t know how to make the magic to stop. The Sorcerer comes home to a terrible mess and stops the mess. Mickey learns not to touch what he doesn’t understand.

If it’s not yours, don’t touch it. What a theme! I love Mickey and the movie Fantasia. Mickey is a great character, though he has no dialogue. He seems so innocent while attempting to avoid his chores. Reminds me of some kids I know!

For a classroom extension, we could watch the movie Fantasia. (Frankly, it’s a requirement for all children to experience their childhood.) We could discuss the plot and use of music in the movie. We also could integrate the chopping of the broom that Mickey does in with math as far as multiplication and division. (Mickey chopped each broom into two pieces. If he had 12 brooms, how many pieces did he chop them into? What if he had 100 chopped up pieces. How many brooms did he start out with?)
