In 1969, Elliot Tiber, an interior designer living in Greenwich Village, New York, has to move back upstate to help his parents run their dilapidated Catskills motel, The El Monaco. Upon hearing that a planned music and arts festival has lost its permit from the neighboring town of Wallkill, NY, Elliot calls producer Michael Lang at Woodstock Ventures to offer his family's motel to the promoters and generate business. Three week later half a million people are on their way to his neighbor's farm. Elliot Theichberg lavora come arredatore al Greenwich Village ed è impegnato sul fronte del riconoscimento dei diritti degli omosessuali. Ha però un grosso problema perchè i suoi genitori Jake e Sonia (due ebrei fuggiti dall’Europa dell’Est) stanno per perdere, a causa dei debiti, il decrepito motel che gestiscono a Catskill. Le soluzioni non sembrano a portata di mano fino a quando giunge la notizia che gli organizzatori di un’importante manifestazione musicale si sono visti ritirare l’autorizzazione dalla municipalità di Wallkill. Elliot telefona, offre il motel come base e presenta il vicino proprietario di un terreno di 600 acri. I ‘mitici’ 3 giorni di Pace e Musica stanno per realizzarsi.Si sorride e si ride (grazie anche alla superba caratterizzazione di Imelda Staunton nei panni della taccagna e iperattiva madre di Elliot). Ma soprattutto si percepiscono la vitalità e l’energia di un universo giovanile che, nonostante il Vietnam o forse anche grazie a quell’orrore insensato, sentiva ancora il bisogno di credere in un’utopia pacifista che sembrava però traducibile in realtà.
