I liked how this book starts out by telling a narrative story about a butterfly in the young stages of life named Danaus. It also has beautiful pictures and captions but it seems to be more of an upper-grade level reading like 4th or 5th grade. In the first page, it shows a map of the United States that shows the flight path of the monarch which I found interesting and could see using in a powerpoint. Another aspect that I enjoyed was the growth chart of the butterfly on page 18 and 19 and how it showed pictures of the chrysalis forming and the time frame of when the butterfly forms and what it looks like inside. I could see using this in an insect life cycle unit on etymology or learn about migration patterns. I could see my 3rd graders marking a map of the U.S and Mexico of the flight path of the Monarch and would love to buy a butterfly raising kit with caterpillars and plants to grow and release butterflies ourselves like I got to do in elementary school. I think this would be a good opportunity to discuss insects further and the innate knowledge that they hold and why these insects are important to preserve. ( )

The reader follows the life cycle of a monarch butterfly, Danaus. The story starts as Danaus is laid as an egg. It then goes into her life as a caterpillar and how she grows bigger until eventually she forms her chrysalis and becomes a butterfly. She then migrates South the central Mexico in the winter along with thousands of other monarch butterflies. There she can survive the winter months. While she is in central Mexico, she mates and gets the strength that she needs to lay eggs of her own. As the months get warmer, she migrates back North along with many other butterflies. As she is migrating North she finds some milkweed to lay her eggs on and eventually dies . Thus completing the life cycle.

This book gives kids an insight into the complete life of a monarch butterfly through narrative and diagrams. It tells the story of Danaus, a monarch butterfly, from the time she is laid as an egg to when she dies as butterfly who has laid eggs of her own. The book is full of colorful pictures, and excellent diagrams and well as captions giving the information on those diagrams. I would probably teach an introduction or ending on butterflies with this book, maybe even the same on insects, and it would be probably be to an older set of students, more 3-8th grade.
