This is a great start to a new series, set in a paranormal world with slightly different 'rules' than the ones I've previously read. It was fun to begin learning about this one, and I suspect that future books (two of which have already been published) will add to the richness of Joyee's imaginings.

I really enjoyed this story about Micah, a typical alpha-male bad-ass vampire warrior, who falls for Riley, an unconventional vampire doctor who believes he can learn from human medicine to help vampires heal from their fights with demons (rogue vampires in this world). Micah has had to be very tough to survive what he does as a warrior, and I enjoyed accompanying him on his voyage of discovery about his softer side.

Riley brings out that softer side in Micah. Even though it happened a little too quickly and easily for my taste, I enjoyed reading about this development. I liked their banter and attempts at compromise, and would have liked to see a lot more of their struggle. It was just such fun!

I hope the sequels will give us more explosive relationships like this! ( )
