A Londra, prima dello sbarco in Normandia, il tenente americano Charlie Madison, addetto alle pubbliche relazioni del contrammiraglio Jessup, conosce e intreccia una corrisposta relazione con Emily Barham, una vedova di guerra arruolata nell'esercito inglese. Per motivi di prestigio, Jessup ordina a Madison di preparare un film sulle unità motocorazzate della Marina in occasione dell'imminente sbarco. Nonostante i contrattempi ed i tentativi di evasione dal pericoloso incarico, Madison è proprio il primo a sbarcare in Normandia. (fonte: retro del dvd)
