Using the power of the Net, she has banished all of her painful memories, allowing herself to live in a state of perfect contentment on a far-future Earth. Of the two creatures, Orielna is happy to live in her creator's shadow, but Josef is not. When the pain inside him becomes overwhelming, he commits a murder and flees into the tangle of the Garden, a place where death has not been conquered. An excellent collection of three novellas, all with a very general theme of transhumanism.

The first, called "Shadows", is an intriguing and original take on the aliens-invade-Earth story. Vivid, eerie, well-written, and surprising.

"Behind the Eyes of Dreamers" is also impressive, as it deals with interesting questions of identity and personhood.

"The Renewal" was my favorite of the three. It depicts a future Earth where extreme longevity has become commonplace, and a biologist's attempt to create a new, divergent, dual-gendered strain of humanity. It's fascinating all the way, with terrific characters and well thought-out speculative elements. ( )
