I've read a few of Lee Goldberg's books now, and this was the best yet. A thoroughly entertaining, witty and compelling mystery, with a really likeable hero and enough twists to keep anyone happy. Recommended ( )

At first you wonder if the whole thing is a spoof of hardboiled detective
stories, but eventually you realize that you are enjoying the tale and
can't put it down. A gate-guard security guy is hired by a wealthy
resident to follow his wife. The investigation by this rank amateur
takes you places you Would never suspect.

Watch Me Die. Erica Spindler. 2011. Chris’ mother gave me this book a year or so ago, and I am sorry that I waited this long to read it. It is a popular “lady in distress” novel with lots of suspense. Even though it doesn’t say so, this may be a series. I have read a novel with the police detective, Spenser Malone, in it. Mira is a stained glass artist who is putting her life back together after surviving Katrina by restoring damaged church windows. Mira’s husband was killed in the hurricane, and she blames herself for his death as do her in-laws. The windows she restored in a church are desecrated and a priest is killed. Before she can catch breath, she is robbed, and then another murder occurs. She is dreaming of her late husband and has smelled his cologne. Is she going crazy? Is she responsible for the murders? I stayed up all night to finish this! ( )

The book had a humorous concept: A person working a 12AM to 8AM shift, guarding a rich neighborhood's gated entrance, one that doesn't have any problems, is hired to investigate a personal matter. The want-a-be private investigator reads lots of mystery books, and watches cop shows; using what he reads and sees to do the work. He has a "I don't know what I'm doing" thing. I felt anxious; the guy went up against some violent / hardened sorts. However, over all I wasn't impressed as the plot and characters were mediocre. ( )

This book was one in the Ultimate Thriller Box Set. This book was different from any other mystery I've ever read. The main character was just an ordinary guy that knew nothing about being a private eye. In fact, he does something so different from what he knows in that he is almost living a fantasy and finds out that he is really good at what he is doing and doesn't want to let it go. Some part are incredible funny, and really good read.

Book description
Harvey Mapes is a 26-year-old security guard who spends his nights in a guard shack outside a gated community in Southern California, reading detective novels, watching reruns, and waiting for his life to finally start… which happens when Cyril Parkus, one of the wealthy residents, asks Harvey to follow his beautiful wife Lauren.
The lowly security guard jumps at the opportunity to fulfill his private eye fantasies and use everything he’s learned from Spenser, Magnum, and Mannix. But things don’t exactly go according to the books…or the reruns. As Harvey fumbles and stumbles through his first investigation, he discovers that the differences between fiction and reality can be deadly.
With the help of his mortgage broker neighbor and occasional lover Carol, Harvey uncovers a blackmail plot that takes a sudden and unexpectedly tragic turn…plunging him into a world of violence, deception and murder… and forcing him to discover what it really takes to be a private eye.
