na història d’amor elegant, tendra i inusual entre dues persones del tot diferents: el nen consentit de casa bona que vol saber qui és en realitat i la venedora de mercat que, amb la força indestructible de la seva valentia, aconsegueix fer-lo creure en ell mateix. Seguint l’estructura d’un conte de fades, amb el seu estil inconfusible Fallada posa l’èmfasi narratiu en l’equilibri de forces entre els dos amants, que, acompanyats per uns personatges secundaris magnífics —els bergants Thomas Wiebe i Emil Schaken, la verinosa Gustchen i la dolça Marie Jäckel—, aconsegueixen superar plegats els reptes del seu amor.
