While the "we only see beauty because we also feel hurt and death" message is a bit kitschy, and certainly - it rings a bit too close to "there is no light without shadow" to me - it's nonetheless an important message. Haig does a good job of recognizing the reality and the beauty of being human despite our many imperfections. Still, I couldn't really find myself getting into this book much, so three stars it is.
Proving once again that it's often necessary to take an outsider's view into consideration to fully understand something familiar, The Humans is a treatise addressed to the alien's race, describing the messy, repulsive, delightful and humane nature that makes us human.
