Instead of mashing up old episodes into this new universe, this goes over some of the histories - Scotty, Uhura, Chekov, Sulu and McCoy - and this is really nice because it's all unexpected - or at least less expected than something I've mostly seen before.

That being said, I'm enjoying getting to know these characters in their own setting right now, with their own stories to tell. And I think some of the things that annoyed me about the new movie - it being a traditional action movie instead of something that made me think - feels more present here. I'm not sure if it's how I approach comics in general rather than movies lately, but regardless of the reason, I like these comics more than I like the movies right now. ( )
