Fiction. Literature. Romance. Historical Fiction. HTML:

The golden skies, the translucent twilight, the white nights, all hold the promise of youth, of love, of eternal renewal. The war has not yet touched this city of fallen grandeur, or the lives of two sisters, Tatiana and Dasha Metanova, who share a single room in a cramped apartment with their brother and parents. Their world is turned upside down when Hitler's armies attack Russia and begin their unstoppable blitz to Leningrad.

Yet there is light in the darkness. Tatiana meets Alexander, a brave young officer in the Red Army. Strong and self-confident, yet guarding a mysterious and troubled past, he is drawn to Tatiana—and she to him. Starvation, desperation, and fear soon grip their city during the terrible winter of the merciless German siege. Tatiana and Alexander's impossible love threatens to tear the Metanova family apart and expose the dangerous secret Alexander so carefully protects—a secret as devastating as the war itself—as the lovers are swept up in the brutal tides that will change the world and their lives forever.

littlebear514: Although the stories are COMPLETELY different; the writing is of the same quality and the stories are both deeply involved.

This was a weekend binge read for me and I couldn't wait to get through the last chapter. I am really surprised by this novel's high average rating on GR. Half of the book is mostly dialogue between a soldier named Alexander and a seventeen year old named Tatiana, including seemingly every gratuitous thought that comes into the girl's head. Then later on there are the sex scenes (which did nothing for me) and many, many more pages of dialogue. On one page Tatiana comes across as a very immature teenager who is prone to fainting spells and a few pages later she is suddenly successfully holding down a job.

The one saving grace of this book was the inclusion of some significant historical details about the invasion of Russia by Germany during WWII. The author did insert some of the horrific realities many people faced into the story to give it credibility. Otherwise this is basically a really, really long drawn out love story with too many inconsistencies that could have benefited by some major editing. Perhaps readers who love romance novels might be drawn to this story and the main characters but unfortunately, I wasn't. This book has been on my tbr shelf for years and I am just glad to finally cross it off my reading list. ( )

I read it a few years ago. Note in my offline database: «Mortal boredom. No more from this series for me ». ( )

When it was about the history of the time, it was good. When it was about the romance, it was awful. ( )
