Fantasy. Fiction. Literature. Historical Fiction. Kell is one of the last Travelers-magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes-as such, he can choose where he lands. There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there's Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. There's White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. And once upon a time, there was Black London . . . but no one speaks of that now. Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see-a dangerous hobby, and one that has set him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cutpurse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a dangerous enemy, and then forces him to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.… (more)

I’ve always found the idea of parallel worlds intriguing, so this book’s setup (there are four Londons, which used to intermingle freely until magic corrupted one of them, and now not even a handful of people have the ability to cross between worlds) had me interested from the start. Fantasy novels are often trope-heavy, which makes them comfort reads in many ways (at least for me), and there are plenty on display here: a plucky lass in disguise as a boy, malevolent twins, the dangers of blood magic. Overall, I found this a refreshingly engaging read. Author V. E. Schwab paces her book well, giving some time to establishing the world, its magic system, and its two central characters (Kell, one of those rare people who can go back and forth between Londons, is raised in a balanced magical world, where he is essentially a ward of the royal family and Lila, from our own world, who turned to thievery to survive when she was orphaned and dreams of piracy and adventure) before letting the plot rip. It occasionally feels a bit rushed, but mostly it’s propulsive and easy to get caught up in. There are some breadcrumbs laid for a romance to develop in later entries in the series, but the focus is mostly on adventure and skirmishes, magical and otherwise. Despite being the first book in a series, it feels like a complete narrative. I will definitely be reading on in this one and found it quite an enjoyable book! ( )

This was a very enjoyable read. Well written. Great characters. A fascinating world. Start to finish had my attention and kept me engaged. So happy to see it's part of a series ... time to pick up book 2. ( )

Schwab is a master of creating unique fantasy elements with perfect world-building, both of which are fully displayed here. ( )

Epigraph
Such is the quandary when it comes to magic, that it is not an issue of strength but of balance. For too little power, and we become weak. Too much, and we become something else entirely. ---- Tieren Serense. head priest of London Sanctuary

Book description
"Red London is rife with magic. Grey London has none at all. White London may soon destroy itself in its attempts to steal the powers of its rivals. (And Black London? Well, that city no longer exists except as a cautionary tale to magic abusers.) Traveling between these very different dimensions is Kell, ambassador for Red London's royal family. However, unbeknownst to his employers, he's also a smuggler, transporting forbidden artifacts from one world to the next. When his illicit activities land him in serious trouble, Kell must depend on street thief Delilah Bard if he wants to survive and save his home world from destruction." - NoveList Plus description by Gillian Speace
