This book includes information and a folk legend about the frontiersman Davy Crockett. By combining the two it is sure to keep any reader interested. It also has very interesting and detailed illustrations. ( ) This story takes the reader on a wild adventure of Davy Crockett taking down a giant gator. The book starts out telling about who the true Davy Crockett was. Then the story moves onto to explaining that Crockett fell from the sky with a shotgun and coonskin hat on his instead of being born the normal way. By youth he was known as the best hunter around. He decides to take down a giant gator that is causing the stream boats on the Mississippi River trouble. The gator and Davy Crockett fight a long battle with Crockett winning in the end. Some themes from this book are tall tales, humor and exaggeration. This would be a great book to use during a lesson based on how comparing folk literature to non-fiction. Throughout the reading of the book, I would stop periodically to ask the students if what was happening in the story truth or exaggeration. no reviews | add a review
