Very generic widescreen superhero action. A mysterious super-powered being has been operating from the shadows for 70 years as an American secret weapon. When he is brought into the light, will he be Superman's greatest ally or greatest enemy? I simply cannot care about yet another retroactively implanted character. Though the story is nicely executed overall, in the long run it may only be memorable as the starting point of a new era of introducing crazy new powers for Superman. Oh, boy. ( )

Superman Unchained was a bit slow at the start but was good once it got going. Batman made some good appearances. Great Jim Lee art work. Could have looked even better had it been a bigger Absolute edition. But, the deluxe edition is bigger than the normal DC hardcovers so this is the best available way to pick this story up. Lots of covers, even variants included, some script and uncolored pages in the extras. I don't know that there would be much else to include as extras if they printed this as an Absolute edition unless we saw an intro written for it. ( )

Lots of stuff going on in this Superman TPB. Superman is going up against a terror group called Ascension. General Lane is still up to his shenanigans, not to mention Superman meets a guy named Wraith as well, and that’s quite a meeting. Oh, and Lex is back in the equation and for the first time in what seemed like forever Lois Lane was in the TPB in a real way, doing things and helping SUperman and not just being a background player.

I thought it was a pretty good TPB. It was hard to get into at first, but it definitely, definitely got better as it went on. A very interesting sorta restart-ish thing to the series. My thought once I got finished with this TPB was that maybe there’s some hope for the for the New 52 Superman after all.

I got this advanced galley through Netgalley on behalf of DC Entertainment ( )
