Read this back in 1991.

Since popular science books from the past can date fast, the following may be the only points of interest for most.

Gribbin, two decades later, wrote another climate change book called Hothouse Earth.

1967 was the first year we could monitor the extant of Arctic ice cap coverage via satellite -- a rather short base line.

Land based temperature measuring stations are prone to err, due to urban heat island effects, in the direction of too high of temperatures.

Contrary to myth, global warming didn't become a new concern after the 1970s prediction of a new ice age didn't pan out. There was an international scientific conference in the 1950s about a possible greenhouse effect.

Gribbin gives one scenario of slight warming due to a greenhouse effect followed by pronounced cooling. ( )
