The Manhattan waterfront is one of New York City's most magnificent vistas, boasting both the majestic Statue of Liberty and the George Washington Bridge, the world's busiest span for motor vehicles. But in "Devil's Bridge," Detective Mike Chapman will discover the peril that lurks along this seemingly benign expanse as he takes on his most personal case yet: the disappearance of Alex Cooper. Coop's sudden disappearance is fraught with terrifying complications: scores of enemies she has made after a decade of putting criminals behind bars; a recent security breach with dangerous repercussions; and a new intimacy in her relationship with Mike, causing the Police Commissioner himself to be wary of the methods Mike will use to get Coop back... if he can. A different perspective in this 17th book of the Alexandra Cooper series.

After one of her cases blows up in court, Alexandra Cooper goes missing. She had left her friends at a local bar and restaurant and then vanished before she could get into the Uber she'd called. The NYPD and the DA's office all get involved in the search with Mike Chapman nearly going of the rails with concern and worry. What has happened and who has taken their beloved friend and colleague? The entire cohort is stymied, and every criminal connected to Alex is a possible suspect. There are a lot of possibilities.

This was my least favorite of all the books I've read in this series. I did not care for the main voice in this story to be that of Mike Chapman with Alex putting in only a cursory appearance at the beginning. I missed all the legal and courtroom drama -- one of the main reasons I read these novels. The plot got really bogged down with a lot of historical detail that was basically irrelevant, especially when it got to the Irish criminal aspects and the connection to Chapman. The whole scenario and reason for Alex's disappearance was just not very compelling. I actually don't care that much for Mike Chapman despite the fact that now he and Alex are in a romantic relationship. It just doesn't seem like a match made in heaven to me. Regardless, I thought the whole last half of the book was actually rather boring.

One thing I did enjoy was the audio version due to the skills of the narrator. The male/female voices and the accents were really well done making each character stand out clearly.

I will likely read future installments hopeful that the story lines will return to the typical legal thrillers they were in the past. ( )

The Manhattan waterfront is one of New York City’s most beautiful vistas, boasting both the noble Statue of Liberty and the George Washington Bridge, the world’s busiest for motor vehicles. But in Devil’s Bridge, Assistant DA Alex Cooper will discover the menace that lurks in this seemingly benign corner of New York City as she and Detective Mike Chapman, in the midst of their own growing relationship, take on a case that forces them into their most vulnerable positions yet—apart from each other, as a killer’s twisted plan draws ever closer to home. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it. I liked the fact that the story was told from Mike Chapman's perspective. ( )

I enjoy reading about this character, but this book really seemed as if I had read it before. ( )

This is the seventeenth book in a series that follows sex crimes prosecutor Alex Cooper and two detectives Mike Chapman and Mercer Wallace. Alexandra Cooper is the chief prosecutor of the Manhattan Sex Crimes Unit and has made more enemies over the years than most people can imagine. In this novel there were two story lines, one of which had Alex prosecuting a sex trafficker, and the second involved Alex herself. The book becomes much more interesting when Alex disappears. For the rest of the book she remains missing, allowing the reader to have the NYPD detective Mike Chapman, and Alex’s recent lover, as their eyes and ears. When it becomes obvious she is a victim of foul play, detectives Mike and Mercer will have to pull out all the stops to get her back alive. This story is unique in that it is the first one told from Mike's point of view.

Overall, the book was just average to me. I've been reading this series since the very first book appeared in 1996 and have always looked forward to each new release. The previous two books didn't grab me the way they used to. In this book, the plot seemed long and drawn out and I really wasn't that interested in it. The motive cited for the kidnappers seemed pretty far fetched in my opinion and I didn't buy it. If you're a fan of the series you may enjoy it, but if you're new to this author I would recommend you try one of the earlier books in the series first.
