I read this wonderful observed catalogue of local gossip and doings historical and imaginative while spending a week in Stromness and Kirkwall, I recommend this as the best way to get the impact of GMB's notorious concern with place. And if you go to his places be sure to climb up to the trig point on Brinkie's Brae. And then, like the poet's carved runes, be silent and it all becomes clear.. ( )
