A rather romantic, patriotic history of the Germans by a professor from Frankfurt who was run off by the Nazi regime in the '30s. Follows the Meinecke tradition of writing about the "German spirit" as if it were a historical actor. First published in German in 1946. The translation is obviously by a native German speaker.

Translations into Spanish, Swedish, and Dutch followed within a year. Then the German original was published in Berlin in 1947. A later version includes a sketch of German history after 1945 by Erhard Klöss.
