Una obra de síntesis, dividida en dos partes (no explicitadas). En la primera realiza una historia de la población, aunque sin detallar cada momento histórico, sino ocupándose sólo de los mecanismos que condicionan la evolución de la población durante toda la Historia; por eso, en el mismo parágrafo se puede hablar sucesivamente y sin solución de continuidad del Neolítico y la Peste Negra. En la segunda parte se dedica a la población actual, primero de los paises ricos y después de los pobres. Lo más interesante es la primera parte, donde se presta atención a factores como la alimentación, la cultura o las costumbres, generalmente muy poco tratados en las obras al uso. La redacción es muy amena y clara, huyendo de los tecnicismos. Sería interesante compararla con la "Historia y población" de Chaunu, mucho más apocalíptica en sus conclusiones. Al principio aporta una serie de parámetros sobre fertilidad muy interesantes por lo que tienen de generalizadores. La conclusión es que las poblaciones humanas preindustriales tienen unos comportamientos en este sentido muy similares salvo en dos cuestiones: edad del matrimonio y práctica del amamantamiento. ( )
