At first I was put off by present tense, but I kept going and am very glad I did. Wow.

Jimmy Cole is partners with Rob Decker on a paramedic squad unit on a firefighter team in L.A. They're not only good partners, they're good friends. Poor Jimmy is harboring an unrequited love for Rob, who is married to his high school sweetheart and has two children.

On the surface, Jimmy is a woman's man, dating a new lady every week, never staying with one for long. Otherwise he's closed mouth about his private life. It's the mid 70s, and being openly gay would cause him no end of grief.

On the surface, Rob' s marriage is happy and satisfying. Deeper down, however, both Josey and Rob are aware that their relationship is seriously lopsided. Josey's needs are not being met and Rob admits, at least to himself, that he does not like sex.

The most satisfying relationship Jimmy and Rob have is with each other and the book follows this relationship from the 1970s through the end, some twenty years later.

Fun stuff: Capt. Foster who acts like a father figure throughout the story he likes to wear women's clothing, made for him by his wife!

Dr. Matt Moody, Jimmy' s life partner, who proves to be one of the most understanding of men. His acceptance of Rob and Jimmy's relationship is simply lovely.
