Kharma's Abrasive Contusions is a creditable effort to mix murder film noir and science fiction together. The physical description of the main character is interesting and carries the reader into the start of the tale in a promising way, but the story fails to deliver. Purfield over-salts his story with literary devices and phrases and plot development common to murder mysteries and film noir in order to establish the tale's credentials. There is not enough original writing to make it really good. Perhaps the biggest failing in this story is the lack of realism in the actions, reactions and thoughts of the characters, particularly when violence is being portrayed on the page. The violence may be believable but the mental, emotional and physical responses are not, giving the reader the impression that Purfield is more interested in the mental picture he is trying to convey, than any real desire to have the reader personally invested in the story in any way. There is a measure of skill in Pufield's writing, but more experience is needed before this novel can be considered publishable. I am confident that the author will soon be writing professional material; there just needs to be more originality. ( )
