Richard Loving vive in una zona rurale della Virginia americana. Sua madre fa la levatrice, lui è muratore, e si diletta a mettere mano ai motori delle automobili per farle vincere alle gare di strada. È innamorato di Mildred, ricambiato, e la porta a Washington per sposarla. Ma è il 1959 e la Virginia punisce con il carcere le unioni miste. Al bianco Richard e alla nera Mildred non resta che dichiararsi colpevoli e accettare un esilio di 25 anni in un altro stato.
