On the prison world of Zartak, darkness has fallen on arbitrators and inmates alike. The Night Lords have come, and with them the shadow of fear and pain. But they are not the only ones with an interest in Zartak. From the void, running on silent, another fleet emerges. Its warriors are grey-clad and white-faced, and their eyes are as black as the Outer Dark - the savage Carcharodon Astra. As these two packs of ancient, merciless predators stalk the shadows of the prison colony, both seeking a single young inmate with unnatural talents, the corridors run red with blood, and both factions will have to fight tooth and claw to leave Zartak alive.… (more)

This is a pretty good read, plenty of action and adventure and beefy men punching limbs off each other. The Carcharodons are an interesting addition to the lore, with plenty of future plot hooks dropped into the story. They're a bit too Pacific Islander-in-Space, the flavouring is slightly overdone and comes across more as sort of hammy-tiki theme. On the other hand, the Night Lords are very well done. Its a brave man who takes on Night Lords after Dembski-Bowden's masterpiece. They're glorious baddies, motivated by murder and bitterness and riven by infighting and backstabbing. What it lacks is any depth apart from the depths that the Carcharodons keep talking about coming from. This is meat and potatoes stuff, but shows promise and its good enough to read the next one in the series. ( )

Epigraph
They were dispatched into the Outer Darkness upon that first Day of Exile, there to ravage the foes of mankind until their final atonement. Their Forgotten One gave them remit unbound, to set about the traitor, the alien and the renegade without mercy, and to harrow them in their places of strength. So began their long hunt. They hunt still.
