"The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. is one of the most famous memorials in the world. But most people are not as familiar with the college student who won the design competition to build it. This carefully researched volume chronicles Maya Lin's childhood, her battle to create the memorial as she envisioned it, and the incredible body of work she has produced since then. An approachable introduction to Maya Lin for older elementary and up, illustrated with color photographs of her works. I only ever knew her as the designer of the Vietnam War memorial! Her other projects are fascinating. ( )

A great introduction to this remarkable woman whose iconic vision for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial has made it one of the most recognizable monuments in the world. Each chapter focuses on a different project and highlights the tremendous thought and planning that went into each design. The author portrays Maya Lin as an artist, an activist and an architect. Thorough bibliography and source notes at the end of the book. Recommend for strong upper elementary school readers and up who are looking for books on architects, famous women, Chinese Americans, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial or the Martin Luther King Jr. Civil RIghts Memorial.
