Nicole Foster is back at her job as a detective at the Aberdeen Police Department while she raises her niece, Emma, after her sister Stacy's disappearance. Nicole still struggles with her addiction but has learned to control her urges. The story begins with Nicole and her partner, Carter, investigating a one-year-old's death by being left all day inside a hot car. This part of the book is tough to read as the author skips back and forth from learning more details about this poor baby's death to Nicole's inevitable confrontation with her crazy sister. This second book in the series resolves all the loose ends in the first book and builds suspensefully to a thrilling conclusion. Good entertainment. ( ) I like this author. It has been a while since I have read anything by this author. Thus the reason when I got the chance to read this book I jumped on it without a second thought. While, I have not read the first book in this series, I didn't have issues jumping right into this story. In fact, I liked Nicole. The problem is not her as much as the storyline. The storyline lacked intensity and a strong character emotional connection. The story starts out with a father grieving as he left his child in the car. A sad but all too real situation. Nicole is called out to help on the case. From this point on I was ready for the story to pick up. It didn't but I still held out hope and kept reading. The story moved at a slow pace without a lot of emotion emulating from the characters for me. Overall, this is not a favorite book of mine from this author as I but I will still read more books by this author. no reviews | add a review

Homicide detective Nicole Foster has finally balanced an unsteady life and is anxious for a second chance. There's no better place to start over than at the beginning--back at her childhood home on the Washington coast, where's she raising her niece and keeping an eye on her increasingly fragile father. But Nicole's past is never truly behind her--not when a disturbing new case stirs dark memories of the haunting investigation that shattered her career. In the middle of the hottest August in a century, a toddler is found dead inside a parked car. Her father says he forgot her. It's an unthinkable crime. And for Nicole, it's made all the more unbearable by her own suffocating secrets--those shared by an old rival who has reappeared from the shadows and is pushing Nicole to the edge once again. Now, wherever the truth lies, solving this case and avenging an unforgivable death is the most important move in Nicole's career. But to see it through to the end, how far is she willing to go? And what is she prepared to risk this time? No library descriptions found. |
