At 9:40 p.pm, Tuesday, February 15, 1898, the American battleship Maine exploded in the harbor of Havana, Cuba. Out of a complement of 351 officers and men, 266 lost their lives. The tragedy was one of a series of events that led the United States into the Spanish-American War and a new age.
