Hillary Greene returns to Thames Valley Police HQ, acting as a consultant for the Crime Review Team, looking into murders which the police have never been able to solve. She wasn't sure she wanted to go back. But solving crimes is irresistible for Hillary Greene. And it doesn't hurt that her new boss is devastatingly handsome. Twenty years ago, mother-of-three Anna McRae was found beaten to death in her kitchen with a rolling pin. She'd been having an affair with her brother-in-law, so the prime suspect was Anna's sister Debbie. But the evidence never added up. However as Hillary digs deeper, more secrets and betrayals emerge. Who wanted Anna dead and can Hillary finally bring her justice? Meanwhile, Hillary is distracted by an unknown admirer, who quickly seems to be going from suitor to stalker. Can Hillary solve a fiendishly complex case from the past while fending off unwanted attention?… (more)

She gave up The Job and being a DI eighteen months ago and had a good time touring in her narrow boat. Now restlessness coincided with her old friends wanting her to come back to Thames Valley as a consultant and work with a new batch of nonsworn staff to work on cold cases. The first one is twenty years old and is as much of a challenge as can be. Add in a very attractive supervisor as well as a somewhat unhinged stalker and you have another wonderful procedural! ( )

Eighteen months have passed since DI Hillary Greene retired. Months of travelling the canals of England but she is home now and bored. So she joins the cold case team back at her old station where her new boss Superintendent Steven Crayle, being unsure of her, gives Hillary a difficult case as her first one. Twenty years ago Mrs Anne McRae was killed in her kitchen, though there was a suspect nothing could be proven. And what about Hillary's stalker, how will that resolve itself.
Another good, interesting well-written mystery in this series, now with some new characters added to the mix. Already looking forward to the next. ( )

I enjoyed this story. I liked Hillary as a consultant and enjoyed meeting the new characters but the plot was pretty easy to figure out and I'm not usually a fan of cliffhangers. I prefer it when books in a series have a distinct ending without a bunch of loose ends. It's a good continuation of the series but I wish that the plot was a little more complex. ( )

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.

In this twelfth instalment, Hillary returns to work as a civilian consultant looking into cold cases, having found 18 months of retirement more than enough. No longer being an actual police officer is an adjustment, although other things are refreshingly the same: Hillary still has her bell-shaped hair cut (I find this very intriguing - kicking out at the bottom all round??) and every heterosexual male she encounters is of course attracted to her. I enjoyed her stroppy young assistant Vivienne and the plot was a decent one, although an awful lot of "man" hours seemed to be going into one 20 year old cold case, even if it was an unsolved murder. Hillary's stalker is rather alarming.

Still enjoying these very much. ( )
