As a baby Jonathan Graves is rescued from a black magic cult led by his father Malcolm (Michael Des Barres). Years later an adult Jonathan (Peter Liapis) inherits his father's mansion and moves in with girlfriend Rebecca (Lisa Pelikan). All is well at first but Jonathan is soon developing an interest in black magic and conjuring up demons including the titular ghoulies. Given this is from the Charles Band stable abundant cheese is guaranteed. The tone is light and semi-comedic; the story slight and the ghoulies are rarely seen and have little to do. The look is quintessential mid-'80s horror with all the big hair and electric fashions that that implies. Luca Bercovici's direction is flat and dull and the actors go about their business with minimal fuss and minimal talent. In the end "Ghoulies" is mildly diverting in a dumb way and delivers exactly what you would expect from a film with a poster that has a penis-like puppet sticking out of a toilet bowl over the tagline "They'll get you in the end".
