Sylvia (Sylvia Kristel) is desperate to escape her lover Marc (Patrick Bauchau) so takes the rather drastic step of travelling to Brazil for a body-altering bout of plastic surgery. This transforms her into the beautiful and alluring Emmanuelle (Mia Nygren). As Emmanuelle she embarks on a journey of sexual discovery, but unfortunately Marc is never far from her thoughts. "Emmanuelle 4" tries to maintain the dreamy, semi-surreal atmosphere of the previous films but is hampered by the loss of Sylvia Kristel, who only appears in the opening sequence. Her replacement, Mia Nygren, is certainly beautiful to look at, but is wooden and awkward throughout and is totally lacking in Kristel's charming and charismatic screen presence. The film is, however, lushly shot in some great locations across South America and the Caribbean. Cinematographer Jean-Francis Gondre's approach is always colourful and appealing with the many softcore sex scenes shot tastefully with plenty of style. The soundtrack by Michel Magne is also pretty good, with a great breathy theme song. Overall "Emmanuelle 4" isn't as good as its predecessors, but it is still a fun little effort with plenty of mildly entertaining moments. ( )
