One hundred years ago, a sheriff's posse killed dark warlock Rhyfel Gremory, but his witch-disciples escaped, and their magic made them nearly immortal. To keep their power, each year one of the witch-disciples kills a descendant of one of the men in the posse, a twelve-year cycle that has cost dozens of lives, including that of Seth Tanner's brother, Jesse. Seth uncovers a cycle of ritual murders that feed the witch-disciples' power, and he saves Evan Malone, one of the warlock's potential victims. Neither Seth nor Evan expected to fall in love, but when the dust settles, they find themselves on the run and on the road together, heading toward Pittsburgh, on the trail of the next killer. Seth wonders whether Evan will come to regret his choice to stay together, now that he's living the reality of Seth's nomadic life and the risks that come with it. He wants Evan to stay, but he's afraid that Evan would be better off without him, living a normal life. Evan's whole world has been upended, but there's one thing he's sure of, his love for Seth. Evan worries that he's a liability, not yet able to hold his own in Seth's rough-and-tumble world, but determined to do whatever necessary to have Seth's back. On the way to face the next warlock, supernatural threats abound, forcing them to learn to fight as a team.… (more)

Burn by Morgan Brice
Witchbane series #1.5. Paranormal M-M romance and mystery novella. Dual POV.
After meeting and saving Evan from a dark warlock’s ritual murders, Seth fell in love.
They are headed together to Pittsburgh on the trail of the next killer, the next warlock. It’s a nomadic and dangerous lifestyle and both are concerned that the other may be rethinking their new relationship. In the meantime, there is no shortage of evil that needs to be stopped.

It’s a fairly new relationship so there is angst between them, “will he stay” etc. Individually, both are in love. Now, they have to survive the warlocks, ghouls and murderers.

Best line:
“Shaking ghoul guts off him” ( )

Seth and Evan are maybe the off-springs of "Supernatural" and "Grimm". I love their silly humor and their demonstrations of their growing love for one another. Seth wants to wrap Evan in bubble-wrap and Evan just wants to be useful in helping Seth fight the dark witch disciples but is afraid that he will do something to get them killed. Together they present one wild and exciting adventure. There are additional characters that drop in from time to time to help out or give advice and you grow to love them too. I don't believe that this author can write anything that is not 100% sizzling hot with characters that tug on your heart. Why can't she write one of those 1000 page tomes? ( )

In this second book of the series the guys are making roads into a tentative relationship but both are insecure and have been badly burnt before. They are also learning to work together as a hunting team. There is no single focus for their skills this time, instead they face a variety of supernatural threats as they move across the country. There are no threads contenting these threats, the guys and the growth of trust between them is the thread holding the book together.

These books have a great world of magical and other supernatural creatures that live among humans, but unknown to them. In Witchbane I found Evan to be a tad irritating (if I was Seth I'd've probably left him to the witch several times), but he was much improved in this book.

A good urban fantasy series.

I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series. ( )

This is actually listed as Book #1.5 in the series but it is actually book #2 even though only 120 pages in length. What it lacks in length it more than makes up for in content. This series really does need to be read in order...so we pick up from the end of Witchbane.#1. Seth and Evan are trying to recover and move forward in their relationship, which is having its ups and downs. Seth worries about how he can protect Evan and goes too far in the other direction. I believe that Evan needs to confront his insecurities and the bigger than life changes that have taken place in his life. Throughout it all we get to follow along as they battle creepy nasties of all types, which I highly enjoyed. We have enough “nasties” in our world and certainly don’t need anymore. As in the last book, there was a lot of action in this story. Wish it had been longer. Great story... just like the first book... but the length was the reason for the 4.5 rating instead of the 5 star rating that the first book received. Book 3 is longer...so on to that one. ( )

This was a nice quick follow up to the first book. This is a half book because it doesn't really involve much of the main disciples hunting, but it was a great addition to the series. We got to see Ethan and Seth get to know each other much better and find a way for them to work, live, and love together now that the initial case was over. There was a lot of me wanting to yell at them for lack of communication, but they were just learning to find their way together. They eventually got there and they will be stronger together as they move forward. I liked getting to see this glimpse of their relationship outside of the big case.
