When the power goes out, it sparks an idea for Dot, Hal, Mom, and Dad. But stepping away from gadgets and devices isn't as easy as it seems. No video games, no laptaps or tablet, no drone. A trip to the basement turns up some interesting materials, none of which require electricity, software, or Internet access. What Dot and her family will need to plug into are their imaginations, creativity, and sense of adventure. They sing, play games, make art, and even read a book!… (more)

My toddler loves this book! It's shorter and at a lower reading level than the other Dot chapter books. A cute story about a family choosing to find tech-free "unplugged" activities for a rainy day. Bonus points for the cute dog.

Great ideas for doing things without electricity/internet/etc. ( )

A short picture book about the fun you can have without the electricity that modern toys and devices depend on. A reasonably positive book with a good message, but kind of bland and understated, and a little "off" to me as it's based on a children's cartoon TV series - which requires electricity to plug in and watch. Some good activity ideas in the back of the book. ( )

Cute! A fun book about the sorts of things you can do without resorting to technology. There is nothing revolutionary here, but the art is attractive, the message sound, and the text straightforward. I feel like if a child is already reading a physical book then they're halfway to this message anyway, but it's a great tool for parents, so long as they model the same behavior. ( )

Dot, ( a popular TV character,) and her family are all on their separate screen devices when a storm knocks out the power. Everyone is a bit puzzled about what to do as everything they think of requires electricity – only then does Mom remember it is “National Day of Unplugging”. The family finds old board games in the basement and spends a fun evening connecting face to face. Parents will appreciate the books message in support of limiting their children’s screen time and their own. The lively illustrations add to the book’s uplifting and needed message. This is a welcome addition to our church library collection from the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program. ( )
