I wanted to like this. I tried to like this but I got nada from the read. Let's be honest as a reader, when you find yourself skimming more pages than what you're actually reading it's probably best to let this go before anyone got hurt.

Shane is a PI working in Chicago for wives of husbands who are cheating on them. Denise hires her to get proof of her husband, Dane Quimby's affairs and find the money he's hiding. Posing as Dane's eharmony date, Shane manages to move half of Dane's money into Denise's bank account, but Shane is almost caught on her way out of the restaurant when Dane's security company, Cipher Security, sends in two agents who have detected the theft of Dane's money. One agent, Gabriel, is fascinated with Shane and makes it his mission to find the clever PI, but when he does, both are in for more than they bargained for.

There are many things to like about Code of Conduct, but unfortunately, the book is not without problems. At the beginning of the story, the pacing is crafty as we learn about the mystery involving Dane and at the same time, get a glimpse into Shane's world as well as her mind. Also, the attraction between Gabriel and Shane is immediately palpable, but quickly turns into a delicious slow burn romance. Although I don't claim to be an expert on the issues resulting from amputation, the representation of an amputee seems well done, especially since it involves a main character. However, the mystery goes off the rails a bit after we learn that Denise has disappeared and the plot shifts focus to a character named Karpov that we never really get to know. Dane does come back into the story later, but by then, his part of the story seems to have gotten lost. Overall, Code of Conduct is a very interesting romantic suspense novel with moments in the book that actually shine. ( )

This is part of the Penny Reid Smartypants romance series.
We get to see Quinn, Dan, Alex, Sandra and Fona from the knitting series plus Stan and some new characters.
It was a good story.
Lots of secrets to the Hero and heroine past.
I found the heroine a bit frustrating, she had trust issues and it was agonising waiting for her to finally explain her past and issues to Gabriel.
They had an instant attraction but it was so slow burn I also found that a bit too slow.
No intimate scenes with anyone other than the Hero and heroine.
No ex drama.
No cheating.
No other woman or man drama.
I did get a bit bored.
HEA. But ends a bit wierd, I assume we will see more of them in further books about other couples in the series. ( )

Shane is a PI involved in tracking a cheating husband when she becomes in more than she expected. Gabriel is one of the new employees at Cipher Systems though we met him earlier in Fiona's book in the Knitting in the City series. The cheating husband is also a client of their company, and Shane and Gabriel end up working together as they discover there's a lot more to the guy.
There's a lot of action in this book, but also a slow burn romance. Shane has been burned before, but she's fiercely attracted to Gabriel. He likes her from the start but she's prickly and there's the matter of the two of them working together. They really are a great match. Shane is an amputee and Gabriel in English with forebears from Jamaica and Nigeria. Both facts are integral to the plot and Ms. White treats her characters with sensitivity and understanding. As a matter of fact, she does a great job of fitting them seamlessly into Penny Reid's world. And bonus: we get to see some of the Knitting in the City characters again and catch up with them.
The story touches on some serious subjects, but I really liked how the author integrates them into the plot in a smart way. There's plenty of romance but also intelligent characters, something you don't always get in a romance and something I really appreciate. Now I need to find some other books by April White. ( )
