This tale started like most I know, "Once upon a time." The illustrations made me think of China. The dark hair and eyes of the characters and colors seemed accurate. Also, the houses and boat styles looked like they were of Asian structure. Funtong was a creepy character. He is an evil ruler that wants to take Pearl away for himself. Pearl is in love with Laifu and he is challenged by Funtong to see who will marry Pearl. A fish that Laifu helps returns the favor by allowing him to make wishes granted by three monks. The author uses a lot of expression through conversation between characters. Like most tales I know there was a happy ending. ( ) no reviews | add a review
