Johnstone Pages: 400 Year: 2020 Publisher: Pinnacle My rating: 5 out of 5 stars. Readers are introduced to the main characters of the series in the first book titled, The Jackals. The three men so dubbed Jackals by a former newspaper man are Sam Keegan, a former sergeant in the cavalry, Jed Breen known to be a bounty hunter and Matt McCulloch, a former Texas Ranger. Each of these men have faced danger head on and seen death up close, but what this trio may experience on their new enterprise just might be the end of one or all! Each of the Jackals returned to their lives after they defeated the Hawkins gang. Now, the tale begins with Keegan being a drunken Irishman now turning law man or is he? Matt McCulloch has a vision and it tells him he will meet death, but not where specifically. When Matt rescues a young Indian buck that just adds more problems to his life. Then, there is Jed Breen who rides after those whose face is plastered on wanted posters all over the west, but when he is reunited with Sam and Matt, their lives are about to get even more precarious! I really enjoyed The Jackals, the first book in the series, because it takes three really unique characters with very different pasts and brings them together to make them a bonded three cord strand that isn’t easily broken. With each new adversary these men face, death seems to become a closer reality. But what these three men do together to defeat each one makes for a very engaging story! Ride the dusty western trails with Sam, Jed and Matt where patience is a must, having a gun handy is a matter of life and death and a little luck never hurts! Experience the old west, if only in your imagination, when you sit down to read Stand Up and Die. You won’t soon forget these fictional men! The wild bunch known as the Jackals returns for another round of justice served cold, hard, and with as many bullets as it takes. Nationally bestselling authors William W. and J. A. Johnstone are at it again . . . Some say bad luck comes in threes. And if you're a bandit, bank robber, or bloodthirsty killer, that bad luck comes in the form of three hard justice-seekers known as the Jackals. Each of the Jackals has his own path to follow: Former Texas Ranger Matt McCulloch is trying to protect a young Commanche from scalphunters. Retired cavalry sergeant Sean Keegan is dodging bullets in a prison breakout planned by the notorious Benteen brothers. And bounty hunter Jed Breen is bringing in one of the bank-robbing Kruger twins-while the other one's out for his blood . . . Three Jackals. Three roads to justice. But when their paths cross near Arizona's Dead River, they've got to join forces and face all of their enemies come hell or high water. They don't call it Dead River for nothing . . .
