Royal envoys Calarian and Benji embark on a quest in the alpine duchy of Tournel. Things go rapidly downhill when the duke plummets to his death from the tower wall. Whoops-that's going to be hard to explain. And it's not as though they can just grab the nearest human and make him the new duke. Or can they? Enter one Lars Melker, a slightly gullible cowherd built entirely of muscles and sunshine, who happily accepts their word when they tell him he's the duke now. Soon Calarian and Benji are knee deep in teaching Lars how to fake it until he makes it. They're also dealing with mountain trolls, a monster, a missing cow, and, most shocking of all, a growing realisation that their elves-with-benefits arrangement might be turning into something with feelings. Add in their mutual attraction to Lars, and suddenly the hills are alive with the sound of emotionally compromised collectivist anarchist elves. Also, what's the deal with those leather shorts?… (more)

It's more a 3.5 star read than a 4. It's really not as good as the first book. Cute, and kind of funny in places, but also a bit boring, too. I support the egalitarianism and the different kinds of queer relationships, and Lars is quite sweet, and I love Gretchen and Hannah... but overall this was one was a bit of a miss for me. Part of that might be because it's missing the hurt/comfort that made me love "The Boy" and made "Red Heir's" more overly comedic portions a bit less... trite.

There's a decent plot, and humor, if you're into that, and if you just want a short fantasy story focusing on a polycule that's more cute with a decent amount of sex jokes than whumpy, this is the thing for you. ( )

To be perfectly honest, I only read this to get to Socially Orcward, but I only finished it because it was just entertaining enough to make me. I hereby protest! ( )

Every bit as ridiculous and enjoyable as the prequel. The humor won’t be to everyone’s liking — I repeat, ridiculous — but it was just what I needed. ( )

DNF @ 35%

Looks like I'm the odd one out here but I just couldn't get into this. Benji is insufferable and the "romance" here was non-existent. Benji and Calarian's relationship as secondary characters worked in [b:Red Heir|54236581|Red Heir (Adventures in Aguillon #1)|Lisa Henry|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1592949695l/54236581._SY75_.jpg|84633640] because it was just shallow lust with funny quips, but being in their POV made their shallowness even more apparent and the humour fell very flat. Lars was also such a cliche. I'd read a few pages and just completely lose interest so into the DNF pile it goes.

I don't have a real review for this book, although I loved it. Re: my cozy rating... A duke falls off a tower and dies, but the whole situation is so funny it doesn't even register as violent. There's also a (funny) almost hanging? ( )
