"Macayla Burkett is no ordinary private eye. She's a pet detective, dedicated to tracking down missing dogs and cats. When two famous racing greyhounds disappear and turn up dead, Macayla finds herself in the midst of a much more serious case. And when the thieves target her and threaten her life, she realizes she's in grave danger-until a ridiculously handsome stranger enters the picture. I had a lot of fun with this book! I have had a review copy of this book for a long time but somehow I always seemed to skip over it when it was time to pick up a new book. I really have no idea why it fell off my radar. I love romantic suspense even though I don't read a ton of it anymore. I also love books that have dogs worked into the story and animals play a huge part in this tale. I am so glad that I finally decided to give this book a try.

I really liked Macayla. I can't remember ever reading a book that featured a pet detective before but I loved that aspect of the story. Mac finds lost pets and seems to have a real knack for it. She is really great with animals and works hard to rescue them when they are lost and scared. She's made a few enemies by standing up for local animals but it is worth it in her eyes.

Mac meets Oliver while she is trying to coax a scared dog out from behind a dumpster. Oliver handles a K-9 Search and Rescue dog and is one of the owners of a company specializing in the task. He can't help but go to help the lady he sees hanging out by the dumpsters. Before a lot of time elapses, he jumps in to save the day and is pulled into the events happening in Mac's life.

I really liked Mac and Oliver together. I thought that they had great chemistry and were both very competent individuals. I liked that they were both able to help each other and they were both very willing to do so. Their relationship moved quickly but I thought that it felt realistic.

I would recommend this book to others. I thought that it was a really well done romantic suspense with great characters that both had intriguing backstories and a healthy enough dose of doggie antics to keep the animal lover in me happy. This book is the sixth book in the K-9 Rescue series but I had no issues reading it as a stand-alone although now I really want to go back and read some of the earlier books from this series.

I received a digital review copy of this book from St. Martin's Press via NetGalley. ( )

I have a hard time not thinking comedy when I read the words pet detective, but at the same time, it is hard not to like someone who loves animals.

Macayla's trying to start a new career--one where she doesn't have to have people's well being in her hands. She can't become a real P.I. yet, so she's working for Jeffina doing mostly pet-related cases.

The mystery starts with missing racing greyhounds. Macayla uses her street contacts to get a lead on where to find them, but while gathering the evidence her employer requires, Macayla witnesses a shooting.

Later, while trying to capture a lost Pom, she meets Oliver Kelly and Jackeroo. Oliver helps her when young toughs trash her car and later when someone is trying to frame her for a series of dog
nappings in the area.

Though the greyhound mystery was solved, I'm not sure that the rumors about the dog nappings was solved by the end of the book. I suspect that Macayla will eventually end up moving to Hawaii or Australia to work with BARKS. ( )

K-9 Rescue #6

Having read the blurb for this book I thought of other canine detective cozy mysteries I have read and knew that this book would not be like any of those. Why? Because the author of this series deals with issues that are a bit more intense and a whole lot more real. So, with that said and knowing I have liked every book I have read by this author, I was more than ready to read and enjoy this story – and I did just that while getting to know Mac and Oliver and Oliver’s K-9 partner, Jackeroo.

Macayla “Mac” Burkett is a Pet Detective/PI who finds lost, runaway and abducted domestic animals. She is very good at what she does but takes on other side jobs to augment her income. When Oliver Kelly, Australian co-owner of *BARKS, and Mac first lay eyes on one another they both make assumptions that are dead wrong about who/what the other person is. From their first encounter to Oliver’s stepping in to help Mac out of a situation or two and then her return of the favor later on when he faces something he is dreading they seem to have an affinity and attraction that is rather strong – though neither really expects more than a brief encounter due to the limited time Oliver is in town. Add into this the fact that someone is setting Mac up for dog-napping, extortion, the fact that her life is in danger and other issues from the past that they are both dealing with and you end up with a complex well written novel that is action-packed, intriguing and at times steamy. Catching up with some of the characters (briefly) from previous books was also fun. I am hopeful this will not be the last book in the series because I want to know that this HFN story has a HEA ending in the future…along with wanting to read another K-9 Rescue love story.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC – this is my honest review.

A pretty good story. Macaulay is a pet detective, she rescues lost animals. And Oliver works for a search and rescue unit and has a faithful K-9 partner Jackeroo. The first time Mac meet's Oliver she mistakes him for a stripper, he so "hot", and he thinks she was dumpster diving for food, it was quite funny.
The story progresses into more serious matters however when Macayla is accused of petnapping her for money, and the thrills and intrigue are abound.
I found the story a little choppy at times and the suspense rating was very low. I did enjoy the book but would have liked a more intense storyline. ( )
