‘In my “Familiar Stranger” paintings, water is a metaphor for life, society, environment and culture… The inspiration to use water in my paintings came one summer after I watched my friends swimming. I remember noticing how their bodies appear to be twisted beneath the water surface and separated from their faces on the surface. Suddenly, my vision of them became a blur, and everything about the human being – face, soul and body – became unreal in that specific state. I began to paint faces set against water after that experience.’
