Rhyming text and spirited illustrations take readers through the exciting ups and downs of a neighborhood soccer game. I have to admit, this book was kind of progressive for its time (at least from my perspective/memory). This is the first book I found that had boys and girls playing soccer together (I remember when teams were first co-ed, there were still never more than 3 girls on a team with me). Another cool thing is that not all of the children are white (though only one isn’t). This is a very simple read with good pictures, and is a good read in general. (This makes me feel nostalgic.) This book is a great beginner book for children learning to read. However, my son's reading ability was beyond that of the book so he zipped through it without really enjoying the illustrations or plot. Pros: With its large print and cute illustrations, this is a nice choice for beginning readers - especially those who love soccer. There's more to our review. Visit The Reading Tub®.
