I love the concept: we should definitely celebrate and promote Black superheroes and comic book creators. But this anthology is a chore to read, stuffed full of short stories of one to four pages that barely bother to even name the characters they are about much less do something meaningful with them. Then the trade paperback is filled out with some random six-year-old reprints of first issues from the defunct "Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur" and "Black Panther" series and a fifty-year-old issue of Fantastic Four that doesn't age that well. Frankly, the essays are the best part of the book, which is a sad thing to say about a comic book anthology.

Epigraph
It is not light that we need, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake.
- Frederick Douglass
Dedication
First words
This collection of stories, Marvel's Voices: Legacy, is the fire, the storm, the whirlwind AND the earthquake for many of us, the comic book faithful who, for years, asked the comic book, literary and movie worlds to not just include us as part of these modern-day mythologies but to make our representation beyond just faces on the page. [Introduction]
My parents wanted me to be a lawyer. But the Loa had other plans for me.
