Siblings Jonah and Nell Talbot used to be inseparable, but ever since Jonah suddenly blew town twelve-years ago, they couldn't be more distant. Now, in the wake of Jonah's divorce, they embark on a cross-country road trip back to their hometown of Albuquerque, hoping to mend their broken relationship along the way. But when a strange accident befalls Nell at an abandoned industrial site somewhere in the Nevada desert, she begins experiencing ghastly visions and exhibiting terrifying, otherworldly symptoms. As their journey through the desolate American Southwest reveals the grotesque change happening within his sister, one thing becomes clear to Jonah: It's not only Nell in there anymore. Pursued by a mysterious stranger who knows far more about Nell's worsening condition than they let on, the siblings race to find a way to help Nell and escape the desert before they're met with a violent, bloody end. But there are far worse things lurking in the desert ahead...some of them just beneath the skin.… (more)

Road trips are a common theme in literature, and one of my favorite variations is the road trip that goes wrong. In A Black and Endless Sky, it doesn’t just go wrong, it goes remarkably awry.

Nell and Jonah, each unlikable, are estranged siblings who decide to take a road trip to reconnect after Jonah’s divorce. Nell decides to pull off and stop at what turns out to be a biker bar, where they end up in a major brawl with consequences. They get away, but the enraged bikers decide to pursue them. Then, for some inexplicable reason, Nell pulls off the road somewhere in the desert, and ends up being possessed by what turns out to be a demon. Add in a sin eater named Anna, who wants to exorcise the demon from Nell, and the trip truly becomes bad.

The audio version of A Black and Endless Sky is excellent, one of the best I’ve ever listened to. The multiple points of view are read by multiple narrators, who are all tremendous. They really brought the scary moments to life, and made the time fly by.

My thanks to Dreamscape Media and Netgalley for providing an ALC of this excellent novel. ( )

A page turner—I finished it in a day because I wanted to find out what happened. It was particularly gruesome, particularly the last few chapters, and not from any supernatural causes but just from relentless, brutal fighting among people. I’d have probably rated it higher if not for the interminable bloodbath at the end. But it had enough of the unsettling creepiness that I prefer in a horror story to be satisfying. ( )
