"Legendary detective V.I. Warshawski uncovers a nefarious conspiracy preying on Chicago's weak and vulnerable, in this thrilling novel from New York Times bestseller Sara Paretsky. On her way home from an all-night surveillance job, V.I. Warshawski is led by her dogs on a mad chase that ends when they discover a badly injured teen hiding in the rocks along Lake Michigan. The girl only regains consciousness long enough to utter one enigmatic word. V.I. helps bring her to a hospital, but not long after, she vanishes before anyone can discover her identity. As V.I. attempts to find her, the detective uncovers an ugly consortium of Chicago powerbrokers and mobsters who are prepared to kill the girl. And now V.I.'s own life is in jeopardy as well. Told against the backdrop of a city emerging from its pandemic lockdown, Overboard lays bare the dark secrets and corruption buried in Chicago's neighborhoods in masterly fashion."--provided by publisher.… (more)

I've read some of this series but am not sure I've read all of them. It's been a while since I've read one as it took me a while to remember how V.I. ended up with Peppy and Mitch (dogs).

You wouldn't think that a young girl, a rehab/nursing home, a Jewish Synagogue, a contractor, and V.I.'s childhood neighbors would all connect, but somehow, Sara Paretsky makes it work.

This book is set during the Covid 19 pandemic (I'm not sure exactly when. Sometime after the shutdown but before nursing homes started allowing visitors again), which brought back some not so pleasant memories.

I wish we had learned what happened to Gisella and how her story turned out. ( )

Jumping into a long running series without reading any of the precursor novels is seldom a completely wise idea. This to it's credit does work well enough to be enjoyable, but it's obvious there has been a lot of backstory and characters that I wasn't familiar with - it felt like these had cropped up in previous books, but I'm wasn't sure to what degree.

VI has obviously been a successful (to various degrees) PI for some time. She becomes involved in a case going back some time to her childhood, where her friends and relations played with kids who went on to be part of the criminal underworld - some escaped and some remained. Now it looks like a long-forgotten crime is being remembered by the wrong people and pressure is brought on them to do 'one more' job.

Worth checking out eh beginning of the series to see how it develops I suspect this isn't the highlight. ( )

t was Mitch who found the girl. I'd stopped at a cemetery on the Chicago-Evanston border to let him and Peppy stretch their legs, and he took off.
