Terry's writing is a little tighter than the first - he's done away with a lot of unnecessary geographical description, travel is a little less about the physicality and more plot-driven, and his dialogue is slightly better (in parts). Unfortunately tigher does not mean better in this case - his descriptions are now bloated with technical architectural detail, he's wrongly convinced of his new-found ability to write dialogue, and a lot of what made the first book great is no longer present in his style. I loved the action, however, and the wizarding school was fun, but the plot gets rushed after the first 3/4s of the book get squandered. There's no real payoff to Richard's confrontation with the villains, and nothing feels satisfying. I won't read the 3rd book. ( )

I see why this series really took off. This volume reminded me alot of Jordan’s WoT series. They must be drawing from the same old sources of myth and legend. Several terms and circumstances were close. Really good but Goodkind seems intent of dwelling on the sexual side of things. Nothing explicit in this volume, but graphic enough to make me not read anymore. I would recommend Wizard’s First Rule as a standalone and forget the rest. ( )

wow! this one was even more exciting than the first! first Richard's captured and you think he's gonna be there for over 300 years...then you learn he can wield Subtractive Magic as well as Additive...and Kahlan almost gets beheaded...man! this book was packed with action! I LOVED it! :) ( )

Book description
Booklist

An Epic of Awesome Power

Kahlan has at last gained the one goal she had always thought was beyond her grasp ... love. Against all odds, the ancient bonds of secret oaths, and the dark talents of men long dead, Richard has won her heart.

Amid sudden and disastrous events, Richard's life is called due to satisfy those treacherous oaths. To save his life, Kahlan must forsake Richard's love and cast him into the chains of slavery, knowing there could be no sin worse than such a betrayal.

Richard is determined to unlock the secrets bound in the magic of ancient oaths and to again be free. Kahlan, alone with the terrible truth of what she has done, must set about altering the course of a world thrown into war. But even that may be easier than ever winning back the heart of the only man she will ever love.
