A prequel to the "Grisha Trilogy" takes the reader into Ravka's mysterious past, when Grisha lived as fugitives and the Darkling took his first steps on the path to power. Before he led Ravka's Second Army, before he created the Fold, and long before he became the Darkling, he was just a lonely boy burdened by an extraordinary power. Eryk and his mother, Lena, have spent their lives on the run. But they will never find a safe haven. They are not only Grisha--they are the deadliest and rarest of their kind. Feared by those who wish to destroy them and hunted by those who would exploit their gifts, they must hide their true abilities wherever they go. I have no complaints, but I can’t say that I was particularly captured by the story. ( )

My only critique is that this was too short. Other than that, the illustrations were beautiful and the story was interesting. ( )

Ooo the illustrations are so gorgeous plus the story is great! I haven’t read this novella yet so I’m not sure how close it is but the dialogue was done really well. And I mean…it’s the Darkling… ( )

I have read the short story already and I am so grateful that a graphic novel was released. It is such a beautiful thing to see it come to life through the breathtaking visuals from Danny Pendergast.

I mean, if Leigh Bardugo publishes her shopping list, I will happily read it. These short stories by Leigh are brilliantly written, giving us a lot while also leaving room for anticipation. I wish for more of these short stories to be bought to life, especially The Witch of Dua, Little Knife, and The Too-Clever Fox.

I will spend my life savings on Ms. Bardugo.

PS. On a bad day, this book takes about 20 minutes to be completed, and while it is a collector's item for any Grishaverse fan but it is an extremely short story for someone new to spend a lot of money on. ( )
