Every day in Taylor Barzelay's life might seem perfect...but every day is torture. Taylor is actually the Galaxy Crowned, an alien princess from the planet Cyandii, and one of the few survivors of an intergalactic war. For six long, painful years, Taylor has accepted her duty to remain in hiding as a boy on Earth. But that all changes when Taylor meets Metropolis girl Katherine "call me Kat" Silverberg, whose confidence is electrifying. Gr 9 Up—Having fled the aliens who attacked her home planet, Taelyr is forced to live disguised as a boy on Earth,
until a new relationship changes everything. Vibrant, singular artwork elevates every emotion as superhero
conventions help trace one character's journey to embrace her authentic self, centering exploration of gender
identity and sexuality.

It was ok! Pretty nice art, very Representation. A couple things I didn't like as much: instant effortless magic transition (I recognize that this is just wish fulfillment; there's a place for that, but I don't have to be into it), and the brother's complaints were legitimate and the story didn't give him a fair hearing. I would have liked to see more of both of their perspectives. ( )

What a lovely, heartfelt graphic novel.

The story centers around a very thinly veiled metaphor for being trans; a cosmic massacre six years before left the main character, Taylor, hiding out on Earth as a human boy with a few other refugees from their home planet in the disguise as a normal small-town family. Oh, and Taylor's adorable Corgi? A talking, organic android who ends up being a great character.

Taylor struggles with her human male form, finding solace in basketball but spiraling further into depression. Until she meets Kat, an outspoken teenage girl who encourages Taylor to reach for the stars and be who she really is. The relationship between Kat and Taylor was super lovely, healthy and encouraging, and an absolute delight to read. Teen lesbian sweetness at its absolute best.

Galaxy was beautifully written by Jadzia Axelrod, there were several moments where I teared up when reading Taylor's inner monologue, and even more stunningly illustrated by Jess Taylor. Jess Taylor's art is unique and so, so colourful I just stared at various pages for minutes, examining the details.

I hope it's not the last we hear from these characters as there are some lose ends, both personal and cosmic, that I'd love to see cleared up. ( )

I really liked this heartfelt story about a sort-of-trans alien princess and her struggles with small-town high school. And her awesome girlfriend Kat! The ending was super sweet. And a special shout-out to the beautiful art that brought the story to life! ( )
