"In a world where terrifying monsters walk the earth, one heroic rooster is destined for greatness. When giant demons threaten the inocent, he's going to show them who's boss! The neighborhood cock of the walk is more than just an ordinary rooster--he's humanity's greatest defender! How about a demon-killing rooster superhero? COCK-A-DOODLE-DOOOO! Aaaand the disgusting demon will not bother anyone ever again. Whatever it is the author is taking, I want it for my brainstorming sessions at work!

Anyway, here is yet another manga that suffers from “a fun idea that is good for a sprint but not a marathon” disease. Things went beyond ridiculous very fast, and I ended up constantly checking how many pages I have left.

The epic fight between our hero the rooster and a giant sea turtle gets some points for inventiveness. (No one was harmed, don’t you worry. They became chums.)

If this is your cuppa, there is also hot bird sex on pp. 10 and 64. (They say “bwak-bwak”, so I assume it means that they are having a good time.) You think you’ve seen it all, but no-no-no you haven’t.

Dear sister-in-law, have you actually read this or did someone recommend it? Who is this someone? I want to meet them. I haven’t yet decided whether it should happen at a dinner party or in a dark alley.

That’s 4/6 of my birthday mangas. Onwards :)

Poyo, the rooster from John Layman's Chew, is . . . um . . . homaged? reimagined? . . . as a modern-day ronin wandering Japan and slaying kaiju-size demons as he seeks the one responsible for killing his sister. Fortunately, for some unknown reason, his crow is capable of exorcising or destroying the demons, and, despite his loner attitude, he is able to gather new allies from battle to battle.

Corny and dumb, but I might pick up one more volume to see if it grows on me. ( )
