This is not your typical historical romance/mystery. It’s quirky and fun, but also a great mystery to try and solve. It kept me turning the pages to find out what was going to happen. I really enjoyed this first book in the series and am looking forward to reading the rest. Who knew the Edwardian Era could be such fun?!

This is Christian fiction, but not preachy. Just the faith of some of the characters weaved beautifully into the story. ( )

I’ve now read and, for the most part, enjoyed a dozen of White’s historical Christian novels.

Lady Marigold Fairfax and her brother Yates had an unconventional upbringing, learning circus tricks and acting from the performers who visited their family’s Northumberland estate. But their late father spent all their money on entertainment, and so to make ends meet, Marigold and Yates have put their unconventional skills to an unconventional use -- running an anonymous investigation agency, the Imposters, Ltd. They are approached by Sir Merritt Livingston, who suspects he’s found a leak in the War Office.

This was fun! I thought Marigold’s friendships and her experiences using the trapeze came across vividly (more vividly than her pet lion). The mystery had the level of depth and nuance I expect from White -- which is to say, while it could have had more, there was sufficient tension and twists to hold my interest. I enjoyed the characters’ interactions. I particularly enjoyed Merritt’s realisation that most people don’t know Marigold properly because they don’t see past the disguise she wears in society and Marigold’s realisation that Meritt did see past it.

The ending felt a tad abrupt, but perhaps because there are plot threads and relationships which will be explored further in the next book. Which I am looking forward to. ( )

I enjoyed this book! It took me a little while to get interested but once I did the story blew me away! Roseanna White creates such original stories with fantastic characters!

I liked the circus parts of the book the best! I've always wanted to be a part of the circus, especially being around a lion!

Marigold is wonderful! She's an enigma! The height of fashion yet down to earth. She's loyal to family and friends. Merritt is dependable and conscientious. He's a good man to have around in any circumstance.

The mystery was a great addition! It really kept me guessing until the end!
This is a definite must read! I look forward to the next book by Roseanna White!! ( )

Circus Trained Investigators!

Enter the exciting and secret world of Lady Marigold and her brother in 1909 England. Five years ago, after the death of their father, they found he had left them penniless.

They had grown up with the circus people their father kept on their estate and had mastered most of their feats including swinging through the air on trapezes.

Correctly believing society would blackball pauper aristocrats, they found a unique way to save face while supporting themselves. They anonymously run a high-end investigation agency using their circus skills. This allows them to keep up the facade that they are still rich. The truth is, they barely make enough to support themselves, their crumbling estate, along with the menagerie of circus people and animals that live with them.

Their current case hits close to home since it involves their father’s good friend, and determining if he is behind men that are missing. They are all from a secret intelligence agency in the War Department. As information, is uncovered, Germany and possibly even a war might be involved. They must sift their personal feelings and clues to arrive at the truth.

I highly recommend this five-star book. It is a clean story with intrigue, danger, and an exciting ending. Fans of mysteries and well-written tales will enjoy this!

Thank you, Bethany House, for providing Tickmenot with a book to review. Opinions are my own. ( )

One downside of loving the first several books of a given author is that there will eventually be a book or two that doesn’t quite meet your expectations. And for me, that happened with A Beautiful Disguise by Roseanna M. White.

Now don’t get me wrong, this first book in White’s The Imposter series was entertaining and a good read, but it didn’t reach great status like the Shadows over England or The Codebreakers series did. And part of the problem for me with this book was the similar names of everyone as I listened on audiobook. I had a hard time keeping who was who straight, so unless you’ve got the actual book in front of you to follow along with or have already read the book and want to hear the story again, I don’t recommend the audiobook.

Marigold and Merritt were well suited for each other, and I enjoyed the relationship between Marigold and her brother as well as the acrobatics the two siblings performed. The mystery was intriguing, but the resolution was somewhat convoluted and resolved too fast, in my opinion. However, those things won’t keep me from picking up the next book in this series.

Acrobatic aristocrats who slip in and out of glittering ballrooms, private men's clubs, and grand estates gathering secrets without even being noticed. Sounds delightfully intriguing if you ask me! A Beautiful Disguise by Roseanna M. White is certainly a delightful treat to be had.

Lady Marigold Fairfax hides behind her spectacular gowns and her outrageously flamboyant hats. The tabloids of the time call her Lady M. and everyone wants to be just like her, but no one outside her family knows the real Marigold, not even her closest friend. She tells herself that she is only hiding the fact that she is a private investigator with the lucrative and sought after Imposters but her true self is hidden as well. For if anyone really knew her true self, would they even accept her? When Sir Merritt Livingstone discovers a nefarious plot selling England's secrets with Germany, possibly being leaked within the war office itself, Merritt enlists the help of The Imposters. Together they will discover more than they could have ever bargained for.

The first book in the author's The Imposters series is clever and all together unique. She combines a compelling cast of characters (including a very large lion among other circus animals) with a flawlessly crafted setting, an intriguing plot full of mystery and romance and an inspirational message that will leave you in much anticipation for the author's next book in the series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review . All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
