Bitter Root has been on my must-read list for some time. This is especially true after the series won it's first Eisner Award. When our library added the omnibus, it seemed a good opportunity. The series absolutely lives up to expectations. Consider a concoction of Harlem Renaissance vibes, alternate history, steam punk, and occult fiction. Wonderful. If you have not yet experienced the Sangerye family, you really need to read the book.

There are some weaknesses. The technology used by Sangeryes is really cool looking but needs some explication. In addition, I am sure someone will be bothered that the presence of the jinoo as a supernatural manifestation of hate are responsible for heinous acts of racism. Regardless, this is an extraordinary series with a powerful underlying message. Submitted by S. West 9/6/23 ( )
