Mostly familiar ground, but the early stuff about Markham and the Royal Geog is interesting. Meant as a cultural analysis rather than a narrative. However, he labours rather heavily with his analytical instruments: a triad of Empire, Science and Manliness (i.e. man-hauling) and the relevance of each to the events he describes.
