Your most delightful holiday read: the sequel to the instant New York Times bestseller The Christmas Bookshop, from beloved Scottish author Jenny Colgan.

Christmas comes early—far too early—to McCredie's little Old Town bookshop in Edinburgh. It's summer, but an American production company has decided that McCredie's is the perfect location to film a very cheesy Christmas movie. After all, who can resist the charmingly narrow historic street with its Victorian grey stone buildings and warmly lit shop windows?

Carmen Hogan, the bookshop's manager, is amused and a bit horrified by the goings-on, but the money the studio is paying is too good to pass up. She uses the little windfall from filming to create new displays and fend off a buyout offer from an obnoxious millionaire who wants to turn McCredie's into a souvenir shop selling kilts made in China and plastic Nessies. Still reeling slightly from a breakup, Carmen's not particularly looking forward to the holidays. But just as snow begins to fall and the lights of Christmas blink on, all sorts of lovely new possibilities present themselves...for McCredie's bookstore, and for Carmen herself.

Sometimes one just needs a light and uplifting story to get through a rough patch, and I can usually rely on Jenny Colgan to fit that bill. Her latest (to be published this October) certainly ticked off those boxes for me. This sequel to The Christmas Bookshop, which I read in 2022, is a charming light romance that continues to follow the life of Carmen Hogan, who manages McCredie’s Old Town Edinburgh bookshop, in the year following the action in the first book. Ms. Colgan’s characters are lively and endearing, even the ones who need some help getting there, and at various times, I was thinking Carmen was something of a Scots Bridget Jones, particularly during an amusing conversation about underwear. In all, after a slow start, I was hooked, and I liked it even better than its predecessor.

Thanks to Avon Books and NetGalley for providing me with an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. ( )

Readers may well enjoy all the Edinburgh Christmas festivities, yet wonder about the plot lags.

Why was Carmen even considering sleeping with Rudi when he was gay?
And why was their door not locked?

Major eye roll on Oke trying to take a plane right back to Brazil...
though he would again be far from chronic complaining Carmen.

Rudi and Mr. McCredie were the most fun characters, along with the two nieces!

I so enjoyed this sequel to "The Christmas Bookshop"! It was a delightful Christmas tale in the magical setting of Edinburgh Scotland. Carmen and Oke are back, but I was shocked to find they are not together. In fact, they are at opposite sides of the equator.
The bookshop and Mr. McCredie are again central subjects along with Sofia and her ever expanding family. I was once more charmed by the enchanting descriptions and continued development of these special characters. I so wish McCredie's Bookshop was real, and I could visit and explore the treasure in those stacks!
Both Carmen and Oke experience growth and self-discovery, but can they find happiness apart? It's all in the plot that Ms. Colgan has imagined and created for us.
This could be a stand-alone title, but I highly suggest reading "The Christmas Bookshop" first to get all the feels and understand the relationships. I recommend this title for bookshop romantics, Christmas setting fans, and anyone who loves books, books and more books.
My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this title. ( )

This book features the characters found in the previous novel set at the bookshop, although it can be read as a standalone. In this story, Carmen is still managing the bookshop with the owner, Mr. McCredie. Carmen is also dealing with personal issues, such as finding a new place to live and suffering from a breakup with her boyfriend. When a buyer tries to acquire the bookshop, Carmen and her friends try to find ways to fend off the sale. The Christmas season brings with it many surprises for Carmen and company.

While this is overall a cozy read, there are frequent snipes at wealthy people and also references to sexual activity, although not overt. I enjoyed the main thread of the story, but could do without the sidebar happenings.

I received this novel from the publisher and from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own. ( )
